Algenol |
2008-06-11 |
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private
U.S. company Algenol plans to make ethanol from
a primordial green soup that won't raise food
costs compared to other biofuel feedstocks like
corn and sugar cane.
The company has signed an $850
million deal with a Mexican company BioFields to
grow algae, one of the planet's first life
forms, that has been trained to convert water,
sunlight, and the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide
into motor fuel." |

Aurantia/Holcim |
2008-04-12 |
"Two companies,
Holcim and Aurantia are starting a new project
to reuse CO2. They take the CO2
produced by a cement plant in Jerez de la
Frontera in Spain and "feed" it to microalgae
which then turn around and produce biodiesel." |

International Energy |
2007-11-07 |
"International
Energy, Inc. announced this week that it has
launched its "algae to oil" research and
development initiatives to produce renewable
diesel and jet fuel based entirely on the
photosynthesis of algae, which have the unique
capability of taking carbon dioxide and
converting it into a high-density natural oil." |

Inventure Chemical |
2008-06-18 |
"Seattle, Washington-based
Inventure Chemical has entered into a joint
venture with Tel Aviv, Israel-based Seambiotic
Ltd. to construct a pilot commercial biofuel
plant in Israel, using algae grown with CO2
from flue gas as feedstock.
The plant will utilize high-yield
oil-rich algae strains that Seambiotic has
developed and grown in its open pond system
coupled with Inventure’s patent-pending
conversion processes to produce ethanol,
biodiesel and other value-added chemicals." |

"The
Queensland, Australia, Government is providing
A$166,000 (US$160,000) in funding to support the
development of an algae biodiesel process by

PetroSun |
2008-03-24 |
"PetroSun’s
Rio Hondo, Texas algae farm will commence
operations on 1 April as PetroSun’s initial
commercial algae-to-biofuels facility. The
current algae farm consists of 1,100 acres of
saltwater ponds that the company projects will
produce a minimum of 4.4 million gallons of
algal oil and 110 million pounds of biomass on
an annual basis." |

Sapphire Energy |
2008-05-29 |
"Start-up algal biofuels company
Sapphire Energy unveiled a renewable 91 octane
gasoline that conforms to ASTM certification
derived from algal a biocrude.
Sapphire has developed a platform
that produces a “green crude” and
biohydrocarbon fuels from modified algae.
Sapphire’s founders and leadership team includes
scientists in the fields of petroleum chemistry,
biotechnology, algal production, plant genomics,
and biogenetics.
Brian Goodall, Sapphire’s new
vice president of downstream technology, was
most recently at Imperium Renewables, where his
team there recently delivered the 1,000 gallons
of biojet fuel used on Virgin Atlantic’s
first-ever commercial “green” jet flight." |

SARDI |
2008-03-24 |
"A
COMMERCIAL alternative to diesel using biofuel
made from algae will be developed in five years,
the South Australian Research and Development
Institute says.
Research is expected to begin at
SARDI's new Aquatic Sciences plant at West Beach
next year, facility manager Eric Capelle said." |

Solazyme |
2008-06-13
2008-01-23 |
"At the Sundance film festival this week,
Solazyme is promoting its scalable process that
makes biodiesel from algae by driving a car
through the busy streets of Park City, Utah. The
Mercedes is fueled by Soladiesel, the Solazyme
biodiesel that is "biodegradable, nontoxic and
safe" and made using algae.
SoladieselRD is output
from a refinery, where a hydrotreatment stage
deoxygenates the algal oil, resulting in a pure
hydrocarbon product. The final product’s
chemical composition is identical to that of
standard petroleum-based diesel, and SoladieselRD
is fully compatible with the existing
transportation fuel infrastructure." |
