German automaker would be building an EV within the

debut at the Paris Motor Show in October and once we
get our heads around that, the production model

Spring. Like that? There's more! The supermini with

"Chinese car-maker
BYD showed off an electric car at the recent Beijing

they claim can be recharged to 70 percent of
capacity in only 10 minutes. BYD is trying to get
government approval for more electrical recharge
stations around the country before they start

"The Renegade is a small B-class
sized open-air two-seater designed to maintain
Jeep's off-road credentials. The power-train however
is something unlike any other Jeep. A pair of 268
electric motors power each axle of the vehicle. In
keeping with Jeep's Trail Rated image, the each
motor has a step down low-range gear available along
with locking differentials.
A 16kWh lithium ion battery pack can
propel the Renegade for up to forty miles. At that
point, a 1.5L three cylinder diesel engine kicks in
to drive a generator that charges the battery pack.
The 115hp diesel is equipped with BlueTec emissions
control system to clean up the NOx and particulate
emissions. With 10 gallons of diesel in the fuel
tank, the Renegade has an estimated range of 400
miles although Chrysler also quotes combined fuel
economy of 110mpg." |

"Beautiful beaches
and a perfect climate are not enough for the
citizens of the South Pacific islands of Fiji.
Apparently, they desire cars that are quiet and

will be fulfilled. The company, which is supplying
some of the cars for the Beijing Olympics, has
announced its intention to build a factory on Fijian

Since New Zealand and Australia are only hours away,
it has already occurred to planners that they could

according to Tim Melland, regional distributor for
Dymac Northwest. There are already around 200 of
these very basic all-electric trucks, vans and
shuttles in operation, but the company wanted to
make an appearance at AFVI to broaden their
visibility."
"As Melland told me, if you've taken
shop class, you can fix whatever goes wrong with a
Dymac vehicle and, because of the way the components
are installed, it shouldn't take more than an hour
to upgrade any of them. Want new batteries or want
to try out a fancy new electric motor in your car?
Not a problem. The simpler system means that Dymac
vehicles are around $5,000 less than comparative
Miles EVs (the Miles ZX40ST is $18,400)."
"Oh, and yes, those are solar panels
on the top of the truck there. Melland said that if
you start with a full battery, drive the truck ten
miles and then let it sit in the sun for an hour,
the battery will be back to full charge." |

three of the vehicles will be quite similar in
design. A gasoline range-extending powerplant will
see shared duty in the trio as well, though we would
expect a diesel option in Europe at least at some
point.
For the forseeable future, all three
E-Flex variants will be built at the same factory in
Detroit, and Europeans should expect to see the Opel

"Tata
Motors announced last week, curiously, they would be
building an electric car by the end of the fiscal
year in Norway. One of the first questions that
sprang to mind was answered today by news that the
vehicle in question will be based on the "tried and
tested" Indica (pictured above) and not the Nano
which we suspect will also be eventually electrified.
The program appears to be well underway since
unnamed industry sources are claiming that Tata is,
"... currently working on five prototypes of
electric vehicles on the Indica platform." It isn't
clear if they have 5 different configurations of the
car or merely 5 "validation prototypes" under
construction. They are also said to be depending on
lithium ion batteries to give the city car a 200 Km
(125 mile) range." |

"Some time
back, Tesla made the decision that the Roadsters
would be shipped from the Lotus factory in England
as gliders -- complete cars without a drivetrain.
The first couple of production units had their
battery packs and motors installed in the workshop
at the company's San Carlos headquarters. As work
has proceeded on preparing the second Tesla store in
Menlo Park for opening, the final drivetrain
installation work has been shifted to the dealership
service bays. According to Drori, nine production
Roadsters have now been shipped to California, with
at least three of those having been delivered. In
total, 27 cars are now in various stages of assembly.
The upgraded motors, electronics and transmissions
that comprise drivetrain 1.5 are scheduled to be
installed in cars for delivery beginning in
September. After that, the company hopes to ramp up
production to the rate of 100 cars per month by the
end of the year." |

"Actually,
we are using the vehicle only as a way to sign up
the dealers. But to truth of the matter is what we
are really doing is trying to set up the
infrastructure for electric vehicles and electric
hybrid plug-ins. What we are doing is we are
designing a vehicle as you can see right over there,
which is going to be the size of a Mercedes S about
the width of a Lamborghini that will get 100 miles
to the gallon and sell for 40 grand. That, we think,
will dispel everybody's thoughts that you can't
build a big car and use electricity and get great
gas miles and still sell at a decent price."
"There is only
way to do that and that is to get the component
prices at the right price. In order to get the
batteries and the motors and the engines at the
right price, you need somebody to come in and order
them, it is that simple. What our program is, is
going out and setting up 250 of the best dealers in

Fiorino, now says its vehicles have made La Poste's
short list of potential additions to the fleet. A
prototype Doblo EV will be delivered to La Poste
this summer and then four or five more will be
tested in the fall. Micro-Vett converts the Fiats
and Newteon distributes the vehicles exclusively in
France and other EU countries. Since La Poste is
interested in at least 500 EVs, and potentially
10,000 in five years, getting on the short list
could propel Mirco-Vett and Newteon into the big(ger)

"The
NICE Car Company have announced they will launch the
Micro Vette Fiat e500 at the British International

relationship with Fiat and because their work leaves
the vehicle structurally undisturbed, not only is
the e500 covered by the full Fiat warranty, but you
can also order from the full range of Fiat options.
Powered by lithium-ion polymer
batteries, the e500 has a range of 70 miles and will
do 60 mph. While maybe not ideal for those with a
super long commute, it seems to possess just enough
performance to fill its role as an electric city car.
It's definitely preferable to driving a G-Wiz (sorry

tricks the Indian-built car lacks such as electric
windows and mirrors, a choice of removable
fiberglass or glass roof and a USB, Mp3 and SD input

wheels and leather seats as well as techno-geek
friendly gadgetry like a laptop dock in the folding
passenger seat, bluetooth and sat-nav. Safety hasn't
been forgotten either and the car features a
collapsible steering column and an energy absorbing

First, it will postpone the move to a dedicated

Second, the company is revising its
planned expansion in the US. Rather than establish a
major production facility in the US with the
capacity to produce up to 10,000 electric trucks per

"ZAP is introducing a new electric
truck for fleets with a greater payload rating. A
prototype of the ZAP XL Truck has been completed and
production models are expected for delivery to
customers by the fall of this year.
In the US, the XL Truck will meet
full Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements
for Low Speed Vehicles with a top speed of 25 mph.
Both ZAP’s Xebra and the XL Truck have a
two-passenger capacity, but while the payload rating
for the Xebra is 500 pounds, the payload for the XL
Truck is rated at 770 pounds."
"Range for the XL Truck is about 30
